NEW YORK — With DSrupted, a speaking thing earlier this week and a quick 1-day run through G2E out of the way, I’m now looking forward to my next conference -SEGD’s Xlab 2014 in New York on Nov. 6th. It will be a kooky few days because there’s also the DPAA’s annual event, CEW (formerly CETW and before that Kioskcom) and AdTech. I heard really great things about the 2013 Society for Experiential Graphic Design Xlab, so I was planning to go anyway. But now I’m moderating one of the main sessions and sitting on a panel.
NEW YORK — Call it digital marketing, digital storytelling, or immersive experiences. No matter the terminology used to describe it, digital technology is dramatically changing the way people interact with public spaces and each other—and it’s driving how brands, institutions, and designers shape customer experience. Xlab 2014—happening November 6 at the SVA Theatre in New York—is the innovation forum created to bring designers, technology integrators, thinkers, makers, and brands together to survey the changing landscape and identify challenges and opportunities in customer experience design.
Bryan Meszaros, founder and managing partner at New Jersey-based OpenEye, will be moderating a luncheon panel at DSE ONE, being held Oct. 21 in New York during New York Digital Signage Week, that we expect will draw a lot of interest. © Matt GreensladeThe topic will be ‘How to Connect People to Place Through Digital Engagement’ and Meszaros told us during an interview Monday that the idea is to tell how technology and design can work together and that he expects the panel to focus largely on bridging the gap between technology and design. The shopping habits of today’s consumers have changed; retailers must be able to provide the product information they want through one or more of the marketing channels they may frequent — and all of those communications must be consistent with the physical in-store experience. That means new merchandising tactics are being embraced by industry leaders who are turning to digital signage to enhance the shopper experience and achieve competitive differentiation. For many brands and retailers, the way to do this is through increased use of digital signage. Read More
August 19, 2014 | by D. Craig MacCormack – The integration space has long been considered an “old boys’ network,” but as you can see by the accompanying list capturing 40 of the best and brightest young talents in the industry, it’s certainly refreshing to know the next generation of leaders — and perhaps the one after that — has already emerged. We’re sure this list — like most compilations of this kind — will generate debate, discussion and disagreement about who’s on it and who’s not. We decided to focus on integrators, consultants and programmers as well as a few others whose influence on the industry is undeniable, if not a little unorthodox. Read More
When mapping out how wayfinding should be incorporated into digital signage on campus, ease of use for students and visitors should be the top concern. “The more information that can be presented visually, rather than textually, the more easily information can be digested in terms of wayfinding,” says Lyle Bunn, a digital signage expert based outside Toronto. Beyond the simple interactive campus map, digital signs for helping people get around campus should have the ability to be updated in real time. Read More

Bryan Meszaros, managing partner, OpenEye Global (www.openeyeglobal.com), corroborates Aitken’s comments. He notes that channel players would do equally well to discuss with SMBs the cost-effectiveness they can achieve with tablet-based kiosk deployments if the mobile devices are configured to be used for alternative purposes in addition to their intended one. Examples here would include clienteling and line-busting, with roving store associates leveraging tablets to process transactions and workforce management, wherein idle tablets serve double-duty for communicating instructions to employees and possibly as training aids. How do we define retail spaces to maintain commerciality and the ‘experience’ to encapsulate the virtual world as well as the physical one? How do we journey from private to public place?
